Nettie Harmon

Nettie Ham Harmon, 97, of Old River, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 26, 2018 in Conroe. She was born May 31, 1920 in Dayton to her late parents, Milford Charles Ham and Margarette Leeone Steadham.

Nettie was a lifelong resident of the Dayton/Old River, longtime member of Old River Baptist Church, former member of the Liberty County Ladies Homemaking Club and had many years of service with Sterling Funeral Home.

Aunt Net was 45 years old in 1965 when her sister’s daughter born a boy and a short 3 years later another boy was born by same. A lifetime was lived before those births but the succeeding 52 years shown & proved an unconditional love to those two boys wished by many.

I can’t speak first hand of the preceding 45 years except of the stories told of the expert shot, squirrel hunter and fisherman Aunt Net was coupled with her drive of life.

As to the remaining 52 years the memories began about six years deep when a little boy knew that love was real and all things were safe.

Aunt Net’s fulfillment of life to those two boys grew to legendary standing even more so than her passion of new cars, having her hair not done right by the weekly beauty operator and the drive (literally the drive) to Macy’s.

Aunt Net loved to shop, buy and return items until she couldn’t personally do it herself so she discovered the ability, unfortunately, of catalog ordering. There are still two new bags of unopened items.

Aunt Net had the domino (42 or straight), card playing (crazy 8 or old maid), and joke telling (colorful I might add) ability that would make anyone envious. The game of “Farkle” was one she learned later in life and was a master of luck at as well as the luckiest Bingo player ever. I never left her without getting a few tubes of toothpaste earned from “bingo bucks”.

Aunt Net didn’t smoke, partake in the vices of the vine or grain but substituted with sugars of Divinity, Chocolate/Coconut/Pecan pies and her famous Peanut Brittle. Her stove top abilities were unmatched with her best dishes being fried shrimp, fish, duck and brown gravy and a beef pot roast. The table was full of the accompanying sides at every meal.
Aunt Net was a darn good self-taught French Harp player (harmonica) with a passion for all of the holidays. Music and song was also always a large part of her life.

Aunt Net’s memories are full, everlasting and shall be passed down for generations to come especially about her love of those two boys which was crystal clear. As the tears are dripping from my chin let it be known that her love was reciprocated as many times over and shall be instilled in the children of those boys.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ira Harmon and sisters and brothers, Eunice Jackson, Howard Ham, Lillie Hackelman, Woodrow Ham, Charlie Ham and Hazel Porter.

Survivors include her sister, Thelma Reed of Dayton; great-nephews, Michael “Mickey” Wuensche and his wife, Denise and Monty Wuensche along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and a host of family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Pace-Stancil Funeral home in Dayton with a service to begin at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Danny Biddy Officiating. Burial will follow at Palms Memorial Park in Dayton.

Pallbearers will be Michael Wuensche, Monty Wuensche, Hayden Wuensche, Elmo Camp, Richard Whitaker and Ronnie Webb. Honorary pallbearers will be Amy Stasny, Hunter Wuensche, Kendal Wuensche, Ronnie Carter, Fred Skinner and Judy Frank Steadham.
