Obituary

Dorothy Gene Shanks Currie was born February 23, 1936, in Crockett, Tx. and went home to be with her Lord Jesus on October 24, 2026, in Kingwood Tx. at the age of 90. She resided at Regent Care Center in Kingwood Tx. for the past several years after leaving her home in Huffman Tx. where she lived for 43 years. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Morris Wayne “Punk” Currie; mother, Janie Lorene Tullos Shanks; father, Lloyd Talmadge Shanks; stepmother, Lois Shanks and stepbrother, Mike McLeod; sister Janie Laverne Coleson and husband, Kenneth; brothers-in-law, J.B. “Shorty” Currie and wife, Nita and R.J. “Cupcake” Currie

She is survived by sons, Gary Wayne Currie and wife, Donna; David Lloyd Currie and wife, Kim; Craig Alan Currie and wife Angelina and honorary son, Jerry Deats. Grandchildren, Logan Cole Currie and wife Bailey; Reagan Denay Currie; Riley Wayne Currie and honorary grandchildren Madison Deats England and Katelyn Deats. Great Grandchild, Rankin William Currie; and Sister-in-law, Joyce Currie. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews and many friends.

Dorothy graduated from Crockett High School and earned her bachelor’s Degree from Sam Houston State University where she joined the Annie Gibbs Society which later became Delta Zeta chapter of SHSU. She earned her Master of Education at Stephen F. Austin University while teaching and raising a family.

She taught 18 years in 1st grade at North Forest ISD and 26 years at Humble ISD, teaching pre-K, 1st and 2nd Grade. She was a lifetime Member of Lakewood PTA, Honorable FFA Chapter Member in Huffman, Member of ATPE, TSTA/NEA, HARTA and Sam Houston State University Alumni Assoc.

Dorothy was a longtime member of Huffman First Baptist Church where she worshiped faithfully and helped her sister Janie, cook and serve Wednesday night meals for several years. When she wasn’t busy with the church or teaching, she valued her time with her husband and boys. Dorothy took an active role in all her boys’ activities whether it was hunting, fishing, showing cattle or the many FFA projects but her greatest joy came from spending time with her grands.

She loved going to Logan’s rodeos and passing out the red velvet cupcakes she had made for him and all his friends. She spent countless hours doing puzzles with Reagan and enjoyed watching her excel in all her activities. She taught Riley how to make his first meal, eggs, which stirred his interest in cooking. No matter what they were doing or interested in, their Granny was always there just as she was in all aspects of her life.

Although Dorothy’s physical presence may no longer grace our lives, her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift us. Her memory is a blessing that will carry forth in her legacy of love and compassion.

The family will receive friends at Pace Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton, Tx. Monday November 2nd from 5 to 7pm and Services are set for Tuesday November 3rd at 10am with Brother Mike Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Center Hill Cemetery in Oakhurst, Tx.
