Dr. Timothy Worden “Doc” Harkness, a proud Vietnam veteran and accomplished veterinarian, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2025, in Cleveland, Texas.
Born in Denver, Colorado, Doc grew up spending countless hours outdoors, caring for animals and exploring the world around him. From an early age, he had a deep connection to animals and a natural curiosity about how things worked. Brilliant and inquisitive, he had a sharp mind, a determined spirit, and an unwavering work ethic — traits that would guide him throughout his life and career.
After serving his country in Vietnam as part of the 25th Infantry Division, Doc pursued his lifelong passion for animals by attending Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he earned his veterinary degree. He built a successful private practice and later served as the head veterinarian for the Houston Humane Society, dedicating his career to the care and protection of animals.
Throughout his career, Doc traveled across Southeast Texas tending to animals both large and small. He worked extensively with horses and cattle, assisting local ranchers and farmers with the same dedication, skill, and compassion that defined his life’s work.
Doc served as a reserve deputy with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, working alongside his Golden Retriever, Ben, a narcotics detection dog. Over the years, he partnered with several other tracking dogs — Quaid, Mackey, Pappas, and Wilson — each of whom he deeply loved. Together, they proudly supported local law enforcement in keeping schools and the community safe.
He is survived by his sons Canon Harkness and wife Aileen, Zack Harkness and wife Jennifer; grandchildren Quinn Harkness, Riley Harkness, Ella Harkness, and Hudson Harkness.
He was preceded in death by his parents Worden W. Harkness and Thelma Mae Harkness.
Doc is survived by dear friends Jimmy and Susan Rollins, whose steadfast friendship and kindness were a great blessing to him and his family. The family extends heartfelt thanks to them — and to Sue Matthews, Horizons Hospice, and all who helped make his final days comfortable — for their care and compassion.
Doc lived his life by giving back to his country and to his community. Throughout his lifetime, he had a strong compassion for animals and their care. Doc was one of the best.
We will celebrate the life of Doc on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 6:00 PM at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home.
