Obituary

Edward Glynn Herrod, lovingly known as "Grandaddy," passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, at the age of 86. While our hearts are heavy with the loss of a man who meant so much to so many, we find comfort in the countless memories, lessons, and laughter he leaves behind.

Glynn was the kind of man who made everyone around him feel seen, valued, and loved. If you did something good in life—whether it was a major accomplishment or a small victory—you knew exactly where to go for an "attaboy." Grandaddy was always ready with a proud smile, a firm handshake (until he learned about the fist bump), and words of encouragement that made you stand a little taller.

He found joy in life's simple pleasures and taught his family to do the same. Some of the sweetest memories were made in the garden, where generations of grandchildren spent their days picking peas and digging potatoes alongside him. Those moments weren't just about growing vegetables—they were about growing relationships, work ethics, and memories that will last forever.

Glynn treasured the friendships he built over the years. He enjoyed countless Grey Beards and Flat Bellies barbecue cook-offs, gathering with friends for poker nights, where competition was fierce, but camaraderie was even stronger. Salty Balls fishing trips, where stories grew bigger with every retelling and laughter echoed across the water. Those friendships became family, and the memories they shared will continue to be told for years to come.

Family was at the center of Glynn's life. One of the highlights of every year was attending the Lovett and Herrod family reunions. He looked forward to the opportunity to reconnect with relatives, share stories, catch up on life, and spend precious time with the people he loved. Whether surrounded by family near or far, Grandaddy cherished those gatherings and the bonds they strengthened across generations.

One of Grandaddy's favorite pastimes was sitting on the front porch, watching the world go by. He especially enjoyed keeping an eye on the squirrels—whom he affectionately called "the Democrats"—as they raided the bird feeders and helped themselves to the bird seed. He could spend hours watching their antics, shaking his head and smiling as if they were old friends putting on a daily show just for him. Glynn's life was built on faith, family, friendship, integrity, hard work, and an appreciation for the little things that truly matter. He taught those around him that a good life isn't measured by wealth or possessions, but by the people you love, the memories you make, and the kindness you show others.

Though he has left this earthly home, his legacy lives on in every garden row, every fishing trip, every poker hand dealt, every front porch conversation, and every proud "attaboy" given to a loved one. He was deeply loved, and he will be deeply missed.

As we say goodbye, we imagine him settling into a comfortable chair on Heaven's front porch, watching over those he loved, smiling at a world that is better because he was part of it.

Glynn is survived by his loving children, Dee Whitmire and husband Jessie and Gary Herrod; grandchildren, Dayna Whitmire, Robyn Atwood and husband Jesse, Hunter Whitmire, Jacey Herrod, Jaxon Herrod, and Piper Herrod; great-grandchildren, Kayven, Austin, and Ally Atwood, Hudson and Hayes Whitmire, and Lainey Atwood; great-great-grandson, Colton Parker; siblings, Ray Herrod and wife Rita; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Estes Edgar and Ethel Irene Herrod; brother, Jimmy Herrod; and sister and brother-in-law, Silvia and James O. Brown.

Rest easy, Grandaddy. We'll keep telling your stories.
