James “Doobie” Burkhalter, age 17, passed away on April 1, 2026. He was born on June 26, 2008, in Galveston, Texas, to Robert Michael Burkhalter and April Michelle Burkhalter.
James was a vibrant, fearless young man who lived life with energy, joy, and a heart full of love. He was a member of First Assembly of God in Channelview, where his father pastors. James faithfully served his church family by helping with the sound and stepping in wherever he was needed. He was also a leader within the youth group, known for his willingness to encourage others and be involved. He attended Alvin High School and was known for his outgoing personality—he loved to talk and could make anyone smile. James had his momma’s sense of humor and, as his dad would say, he was “all Burkhalter.” He was full of life, laughter, and a bold spirit. Doobie loved adventure, especially riding dirt bikes, which was one of his favorite things to do. Recently, he had begun riding his dad’s Harley, something he truly enjoyed. His favorite color was red, a fitting reflection of his bold and lively personality.
He is preceded in death by his mother, April Michelle Burkhalter; his uncle, Glenn Maddux; and his grandmother, Joice Hernandez.
Doobie is survived by his father, Robert Burkhalter; his grandparents, Betty Joe Robinson and Darrel Lee Robinson; his siblings: Jacob Daniel Burkhalter and his fiancée, Faith; Jacob Aaron Behne; Alyssa Burkhalter; Amelia Grace Burkhalter; Brelynn Faith Burkhalter; and Kadence Marie Behne; his cousins, Carrington Wayne Burkhalter and his wife, Monica, Robert Maddux, and Sheena Stewart; as well as many extended family members and dear friends.
A visitation will be held on April 10, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at First Assembly of God in Channelview, with a funeral service to follow at 12:30 p.m.
Burial will take place at Magnolia Park Cemetery in Dayton. The service will be officiated by Pastor Charlie Tutt of East Houston Revival Center. James will be remembered for his fearless spirit, his laughter, his servant’s heart, and the love he had for his family, friends, and church. Though his time here was far too short, his impact will never be forgotten.
