Kenneth Gordon McCorkel, Sr.

Kenneth Gordon McCorkel Sr., aged 84, passed away on May 1, 2024, in Cypress, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience. Born on February 29, 1940, in Bainbridge, Georgia, Kenneth was one of the special few born on Leap Year Day, celebrating his 21st birthday only this year.

Kenneth's life was marked by a profound sense of duty and service. Straight out of high school, he embarked on a distinguished 21-year career in the US Navy, where he courageously flew missions during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was present at the Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba. His dedication to his country was unwavering, and his bravery was an inspiration to all who knew him.

Following his military service, Kenneth continued to serve his community, working at the Liberty County Courthouse as a jailer and in maintenance until his retirement. His commitment to duty extended beyond his professional life; he was a devoted member of the Eastgate Church in Dayton, finding solace and joy in old-school gospel music.

Kenneth had a zest for life that was infectious. He found joy in simple pleasures like fishing, playing the guitar, and camping. A passionate NASCAR fan, he loved the thrill of the race and the camaraderie it brought. Known for his knack for fixing anything and his penchant for giving everyone a nickname, Kenneth was a beloved figure in his community. His stories were legendary, and his jokes brought smiles to all who heard them. Kenneth was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and loved cheering on his favorite team. He also loved his boiled peanuts and was known to have traveled many miles to purchase a bag of them to enjoy.

At the center of Kenneth's life was his family. He shared 64 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Margie, creating countless cherished memories together. He was a devoted father to his son, Kenneth, and daughters, Teressa and Melanie, and a loving brother to Curtis and Mildred. His grandchildren and great-grandchild were the apple of his eye, and he took immense pride in watching them grow and thrive.

Kenneth leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories and a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may have left this world, his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he loved and touched.
