Bert Kustermans, 64, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born November 25, 1960, to parents Christiaan Kustermans and Cornelia Ludoviceer Joannes DeBie, Bert grew up in Belgium with the strong values of service, craftsmanship, and kindness that would define his entire life.
In 2005, Bert came to the United States, settling first in Splendora before making his home in Cleveland. He quickly became a cherished member of the community. A faithful and devoted member of First Methodist Church in Cleveland, Bert dedicated countless hours to the church he loved—working as a technology and sound specialist, assisting in construction projects, and offering his time and talents wherever they were needed most.
Bert had a remarkable gift for teaching and mentoring. He poured his knowledge of sound engineering, technology, and construction into others, building not only skills but confidence and community. Known for his giving, selfless, and charitable nature, Bert quietly led a band of volunteers who, with his guidance, helped countless individuals and families—often anonymously—simply because there was a need.
Before coming to the U.S., Bert’s love of music took him across Europe, where he toured as a sound engineer for numerous well-known bands. His passion for sound, craftsmanship, and creativity never faded, and he carried those gifts into every chapter of his life.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Sheryln Kustermans; son Dries Kustermans; daughter Lore Kustermans; stepdaughters Meagan Wavra and husband Christopher, Dani Graham and Timothy Gonzalez, and Sage Hepner and husband Zak. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren—Aiden, Michelle, Daniel, Jaxon, Genevieve, Piper, Savanna and husband David, and Aidan—along with great-grandchild Phoenix Jay. Bert is additionally survived by his close business friend Randy Champlin and a host of many dear friends whose lives he touched.
A memorial service honoring Bert’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 23, at First Methodist Church in Cleveland, with Pastor James McMillan and Pastor Joshua Ray presiding. The service will be live streamed through the First Methodist Church Cleveland facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the FMC Trustees Fund, 100 N. William Barnett, Cleveland, TX 77327.
Bert’s legacy of service, generosity, and love will continue to shine brightly in all who were fortunate enough to know him.
