Marvin Dennis McDowell, 79, passed away on January 21, 2026. Born in Gadsden, Alabama, Marvin spent much of his early life in Lone Star, Texas, where the values of hard work, perseverance, and faith that shaped him would remain constants throughout his life. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Kathryn McDowell; sisters, Kathy Riley and Peggy Shock; brother, Joe McDowell, and grandson, David McDowell. He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Diane McDowell; children, Jennifer Herrington and husband Phil; Randy Cowart and wife Theresa; Ty McDowell and wife Sarah, and Teddy McDowell and wife Erin; grandchildren, Kathryn McDowell, Tyson McDowell, Mona McDowell, Teddy McDowell, Carl Herrington and wife Nicole, Rachel Ballard and husband Brad, Beka Dedeyan and husband Payton, Reagan Rowell and husband Byrron, Madison Cowart, and Logan Cowart; great-grandchildren, Micah Ballard, Judah Ballard, Colt Ballard, Truett Ballard, Colbee Herrington, Connor Herrington, Leena Dedeyan, and Markus Woody; brother, Glen McDowell and wife Ann; AC Riley, husband of sister Kathy; Sam McDowell, wife of brother Joe. Marvin earned an associate degree from the University of Houston and went on to build a successful career as an electrical engineer. He spent the majority of his career working with Bechtel in Houston, Texas, primarily in office-based roles. Later in his career, he was given the opportunity to work in Australia - a highlight of his professional life. He truly enjoyed that role because of the wonderful people he worked with and the chance to work with new software. That position marked the final chapter of his career, after which he retired with great pride. He also proudly served in the United States Army in Korea. When Marvin committed to something, he did it all the way. A simple backyard pond became a swimming pool. A patio became a fully concreted outdoor space. He loved putting computers together, fixing things, and understanding how things worked - always improving, always building. His curiosity and determination were constants throughout his life. Marvin found great joy in cycling, especially during his years in Pasadena, California, where he often rode up to 20 miles a day. Some of his happiest times were spent riding bikes with Diane around the Rose Bowl, side by side, enjoying the day and each other’s company. He was known for his quiet humor and his unmistakable Donald Duck voice, which never failed to make people laugh. With his white beard, Marvin delighted in playing Santa, a role that perfectly suited his gentle spirit and love for bringing smiles to others. He was steady, thoughtful, and generous - a man who showed his love through action more than words. A devoted Christian, Marvin held a deep interest in eschatology and the promise of Christ’s second coming. His faith was not merely something he spoke about; it guided how he lived, how he treated others, and how he faced life with calm assurance and hope. Above all, Marvin loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who led by example, worked with purpose, and lived with integrity. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, craftsmanship, curiosity, and quiet strength that will continue through all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at Rural Shade Baptist Church, 3304 County Road 2274, Cleveland, Texas 77327, on Sunday, February 22, 2026 at 2:30pm with Pastor Phil Herrington officiating. Military Honors to be provided by the US Army.
