Dr. Robert T. Berwind was born August 1, 1939 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to parents, Otto Berwind and Eleanor Slote Berwind. He went to his Heavenly Home on January 17, 2024 in Evergreen, Texas at the age of 84.
Robert was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson Medical College in 1965 and completed his final residency in Urology in 1970 at the same college. He then proudly served our country in the US Air Force based at Lompoc Airforce Base in California as a surgeon until 1972, achieving the rank of Major. Later in life, he furthered his education through the University of Liverpool, England, by obtaining a Doctorate of Divinity in Pastoral Ministry in 1997 and graduating from Trinity Seminary, Newburgh, Indiana with a Ph.D. Theology in 2009.
Dr. Berwind spent much of his life serving on Southern Baptist Foreign Medical Missions, as well as maintaining a private practice. From Zimbabwe, Africa to Malawi, Zambia, Ecuador, Brazil, British Guyana, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Camaroon - he was a willing and humble servant to those in need. A Memorial Fund has been established in his name and with any donation, his vision of enriching others’ lives through medical missions will be continued through his wife Alison, who was by his side throughout his service to humanity. School buildings need completing, clinics need funding and students need educating. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Eleanor Berwind; sister, Helen Ondis. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Alison Berwind; daughters, Rebecca Weyandt, Sandra Moffett, Nancy Schultz, Carol Gaspari and their families, including numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life Service is scheduled for Friday, January 26, 2024 at the New Hope Baptist Church at 11am with Pastor Derral Shelton officiating.
