Obituary for Toy Willard Lay

Toy Willard Lay, 80, of Dayton, Texas, passed away on August 16, 2025. He was born on May 19, 1945, in Goose Creek, Texas, to parents Emmitt and Dorothy Lay.

A proud graduate of South Houston High School, Toy met the love of his life, Frances, during those early years. Their high school romance grew into a lifelong partnership, and together they shared 62 wonderful years of marriage. Toy was a devoted husband who never missed an opportunity to spoil Frances and make her feel cherished.

Toy and Frances made their home in Dayton for the past 32 years after living in Houston. He was deeply involved in his community, particularly through coaching little league baseball and football. A true sports enthusiast, Toy was a loyal fan of the Houston Astros and Texans, rarely missing the opportunity to watch a game.

Toy had a zest for life and a playful spirit. He enjoyed gambling—especially trips to Coushatta in Louisiana—and had a passion for riding motorcycles alongside his beloved wife. Dining at Jose's in Dayton was a frequent joy, and traveling with family brought him endless happiness. Whether cruising to Alaska, relaxing in Cozumel, or people-watching in Vegas, Toy embraced each moment with gratitude and humor.

Above all, Toy was a family man. Known lovingly as “Pop,” he treasured every second spent with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his great-great-grandchild. His big heart, strong character, and unwavering dedication to his family will leave a lasting legacy in all who knew and loved him.

Toy is preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt and Dorothy Lay; his brother, Jimmy Lay; and sisters, Carolyn Lueck and Dorothy Smith.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Frances Lay; son Tod Willard Lay Sr. and wife Shannon; daughter Dawn Lay Bridwell and husband Larry; sister Debbie Lay; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Pace Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton, followed by a memorial service at 6:00 p.m.
