Obituary

Travis Weldon Smith Jr., 63, of Cleveland, Texas, passed away on October 29, 2026, just one day after celebrating his 63rd birthday. He was born on October 28, 1963, in Houston, Texas, to his parents, Travis Weldon Smith Sr. and Donna Smith.

Travis was a man of Christian faith whose life was filled with a deep love for music, family, and the people he met along the way. Music was more than just a passion for Travis; it was a way of life. Following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a talented guitarist and musician, Travis developed a love for the guitar at a very young age. He received his first guitar when he was just two years old and began playing at the age of ten, beginning a lifelong musical journey that would take him to some of the most well-known stages in country music.

Throughout his remarkable musical career, Travis became a familiar and respected name among fellow musicians and country music stars. He spent 12 years as the frontman and lead guitarist for Gene Watson, performing at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and traveling across the country for numerous performances and events. His talent also took him to the legendary Grand Ole Opry, Gilley's, and many other notable venues. In addition to his live performances, Travis contributed his musical talents to albums recorded by several country music artists. His skill with a guitar and dedication to his craft allowed him to build lasting friendships and connections throughout the music industry.

Although his music took him to stages across the country, Travis called Cleveland, Texas, home for the past 30 years. His musical legacy will live on through the countless songs he played, the musicians he inspired, and the memories he created with those fortunate enough to hear him perform. Above all, he will be remembered for the life he lived, the music he shared, and the love he had for his family.

Travis was preceded in death by his father, Travis Weldon Smith Sr.; his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Aslandes; his paternal grandfather, Travis Conn Smith; and his paternal grandmother, Eunice Smith.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his mother, Donna Smith; his daughters, Crystal Dawn Smith, Sarah K. Smith, and Rachel G. Smith; his brothers, James Smith and Thomas Smith; his sister, Wendy Daigle and husband Steven; and his beloved grandchildren, Riley, Lily, Layla, Sophia, and Selina. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends and fellow musicians who will miss him dearly.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Magnolia Park Cemetery, with L.B. Chapman officiating.

Serving as pallbearers will be L.B. Chapman, Tommy Smith, Steven Daigle, and John Wells Jr. Serving as honorary pallbearer will be James Smith.

Travis's life was a beautiful melody of faith, family, and music. Though his time on earth has come to an end, the songs he played and the memories he leaves behind will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
